In April 1972, three planning meetings were held for the purpose of discussing the organization of a “North American Society for Pediatric Endocrinology.” The name “Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society” was chosen and the first set of temporary officers was selected.
In May, 1972, a Constitution and Bylaws were adopted, officers were formally approved, and committee members were announced.
The first formal meeting of the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society was held in May, 1973 in conjunction with the PAS meetings in San Francisco.
The 35th meeting of our Society was held in Toronto with special commemorations under the able leadership of Del Fisher and our History Committee. Original textbooks, manuscripts, society minutes, videos, and photos were on display, with special tributes for both our earliest members and our most recent fellows.
The following videos were created between August 2006 and March 2007, as part of the 35th Anniversary Celebration meeting of PES in Toronto, May 2007. They are personal interviews of three of the Society’s first Presidents, Claude Migeon, Robert Blizzard, and Mel Grumbach, conducted by President Kenneth Copeland in Baltimore, Charlottesville, and San Francisco, respectively.
The purpose was to document a personal oral history of the early days of the Society, including perspectives on Lawson Wilkins the man, major early discoveries in the field, and how each of the interviewees found his way to Hopkins. Each was asked to speculate what Lawson Wilkins might think, were he living today, of the Society, and each was encouraged to share advice and words of wisdom with younger members of our Society.
